Knowing When to Fertilize Your Lawn

Many people take their lawns for granted, assuming they will care for themselves and remain vibrant, green and healthy. Unfortunately, grass often requires a nutrient boost to ensure that it stays viable throughout seasonal shifts and various weather conditions. Therefore, fertilizing the lawn needs to happen several times during the year, but the frequency and timeline depend on the type of grass and the region of the country.

1. Identify Your Grass and Know Your Region

While there are many species of grass, all types fit into two categories: cool-season and warm-season. Depending on the type you have, that will determine the time and frequency of fertilization. Cool-season grasses typically grow in the Northern areas of the country, and warm-season grasses in the south. The central US states can use either grass varieties but should reflect on local climates to determine the best options.

2. Understand Seasonal Fertilizing

When fertilizing the lawn, you need to understand seasonal fertilizing as it pertains to the region. For example, if you live in the southern US, then you likely have warm-season grass, which requires three-phase fertilizing: early spring, late spring and late summer. Alternatively, if you live in the northern US, then you typically pant cool-season grass, which requires fertilizing twice in the fall, usually September and November, and then again in the spring between April and May.

3. Leave it to the Experts

You do have the option to hire a lawn care service. These services will make sure that your yard is well-manicured and cared for, taking all the guesswork out of the equation. Hiring a professional is especially useful when you are unsure of your climate and grass needs.

Fertilizing the lawn does not have to be complicated, especially if you know your region and grass type. However, if you are interested in keeping things easy, then consider hiring a local lawn care company to handle fertilizing, cutting and trimming.
